Clays and Bodies

Porcelain This section reports on studies in clays and experimental results on clay properties.

Glazes

Cone 10 redux test tiles This section is devoted to information concerning glazes, glazemaking, experimental results of glaze tests and so on.

While the information here is as correct as I can make it, I offer no guarantees as to reproducing my results elsewhere. It should also be borne in mind that unless specifically noted these glazes have not been tested for functional use. I work with decorative glazes as well as functional ones and each is identified as such.

Materials

Materials This section provides information and experiments on specific materials that are used in, or related to clay bodies and glazes.

Observations

Books These notes are a collection of observations made while working with clay and glazes. They are presented in no particular order and are mainly left as notes which may one day be expanded with a fuller investigation.

Books & References

Books This section presents a bibliography, annotated where possible, and references to papers and technical sources on any aspect of ceramics that I find interesting. Other links to web sources may be found under Links. However, if the material is reference material in printed form it will be here.

Problems

Lime popping In this section discussion focuses on faults that arise in clay. Many books discuss faults and a number show reasonable photographs but there is a lack of such information easily available on the web. This section seeks slowly over time to address this lack from accidents and failures in my own work.

Clayart

Clayart These pages are devoted to topics discussed on the Clayart mail list. They are organised by date with each topic being given a separate page.

Form New work by Daniel is available on the newly rebuilt Clayosmos.com site. The new site also provides for online purchases. Check it out !

GlazeMonkey researches clay and glaze composition and behaviour, and related topics.

The reports and articles presented here are on research or testing performed by the resident glaze monkey, ie. me. These pages are written very much to aid others in reproducing what I've done, and to allow me to recall exact steps that I've taken.

They are offered freely to anyone who may wish to use the information though there is no implied or stated warranty or guarantee as to results.

What's New

Who is the GlazeMonkey ?

Daniel

I am the GlazeMonkey. My name is Daniel Semler and apart from making pottery (see Clayosmos Pottery), I find the science and technical aspects of ceramics fascinating. I am a Computer Engineer by training, a software developer by day and a potter and ceramics researcher whenever time permits.

These pages are devoted to publishing the results of my studies of various aspects of pottery, glazes and so on. As such, its mainly of interest to potters and others interested in the technical aspects of pottery ceramics.

Please feel free to email about any of the site content at daniel@clayosmos.com. If you have any questions about technical aspects of ceramics, as it relates to pottery (stay away from high tech ceramics which I know nothing about) feel free to email me. I am not an expert but I'll learn from the questions and who knows, I might even be able to help.
